Shopping surplus
- Check sizes and condition grades before you pay; “used” can mean anything from like-new to heavily worn.
- Inspect zippers, buckles and straps on packs and load-bearing gear, and look for mold or dry rot on canvas and leather.
- Ammo cans, wool blankets, medical pouches and boots are some of the best values in most stores.
- Live ordnance, inert-but-real grenades and other restricted items do not belong on a shelf; skip anything sold as “live”.
- Stock turns over fast; if you see it and want it, buy it.
