Camp Perry

over 300 acres

opened in 1906

located on the shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio

  • 1906 original land purchased
  • 1907  Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)
  • 1907 and the NRA-sponsored National Rifle Matches
  • May 1, 1908 officially named the Camp Perry
    named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry
  • 1909 evolved into a permanent camp 
  • July 13, 1911  flagpole was erected
  •  During World War I, Camp Perry served as a training center for Army officers and marksmanship instructors
  • 1918 area adjacent the Erie Army Depot for artillery ordnance storage
  • 1918 Small Arms Firing School opened
  • During the Second World War, Camp Perry served as a POW camp for German and Italian prisoners
  • 210 rifle positions
  • 20 revolver positions
  • 1964 Erie Army Depot closed
  • June 24, 1998 a tornado damaged several buildings on the grounds
